"Castle Kelly", in Gaelic "Caisleán Ui Cheallaigh" or "Cumar na Cathrach" also known as<br> "Castle Kelly’s", "Castlekelly", "Jimmy’s Folly" and "Kelly’s Castle" is an<br> Irish reel in A Minor (Carlin, Heymann, Johnson) or A Dorian (Breathnach, Flaherty, Harker/Rafferty,<br> Joyce, Mulvihill, Treoir). The parts are played AB (Flaherty), ABB (Breathach, Johnson), AAB (Joyce),<br> AABB (Heymann, Miller, Treoir), AABB' (Mulvihill) or AA'BB' (Harker/Rafferty).<br> There are numerous Castle Kelly's to which this title may refer including Aghrane, now Castle Kelly,<br> in the county of Galway (where O'Carolan composed his air "Mabel Kelly").<br> In fact, at one point in their history the O'Kelly's had as many as eighty castles in their territory.<br> The tune was entered as an untitled reel into Book 2 of the large c. 1883 music manuscript collection<br> of County Leitrim fiddler and piper Stephen Grier (c. 1824-1894).<br> The earliest recording of the tune was by the Lough Gill Quartet in 1941. <br> It was printed in Breathnach's CRÉ 1 (1963),<br> Carlin's Master Collection (1984),<br> Flaherty's Trip to Sligo (1990),<br> Harker's 300 Tunes from Mike Rafferty (2005),<br> Heymann's Off the Record (1990),<br> Johnson's Kitchen Musician No. 5: Mostly Irish Airs (1985, 2000),<br> Joyce's Old Irish Folk Music and Songs (1909),<br> Miller's Fiddler's Throne (2004),<br> Mulvihill's 1st Collection (1986) (appears as "Kelly's Castle"),<br> Peoples' Fifty Irish Fiddle Tunes (1986),<br> Prior's Fionn Seisiún Book 2,<br> Roche's Collection of Traditional Irish Music, vol. 3 (1927) (as "Cumar na Cathrach") and<br> Treoir, vol. 37, No. 3 (2005).<br> It was recorded by<br> Tommy Peoples on Fiddler’s Fancy: 50 Irish Fiddle Tunes, <br> Ann Heymann on Let Erin Remember (1979),<br> Tulla Ceili Band on Dance Tunes (1990),<br> John Whelan & Eileen Ivers on Fresh Takes (1987),<br> Pat Mitchell on Pat Mitchell Uilleann Pipes (1976),<br> Paddy Glackin & Paddy Keenan on Doublin' and<br> Chieftains on Water from the Well.<br>
